City St George’s has launched its new Artificial Intelligence Research Centre in the School of Science and Technology, marking a major step in strengthening the university’s position in the UK AI landscape.
At the launch event on 24 November 2025, Interim Director Dr Tillman Weyde welcomed guests and outlined the Centre’s mission to advance rigorous, responsible and impactful AI research. He highlighted the university’s history in AI and the Centre’s focus on developing more capable, reliable and transparent AI systems across areas such as healthcare, finance, engineering and media.
President Sir Anthony Finkelstein delivered the keynote address, Adapting to the Scale and Nature of AI Disruption, emphasising the need for universities to lead on technological and societal responses to rapid AI advancement. Senior leaders including Professor Golnaz Badkobeh, Professor Alfredo Pinelli and Professor Baba Sheba also shared their support for the Centre.
Senior Researchers of the AI Centre presented short talks. Dr Pranava Madhyastha spoke on generative AI; Professor Artur d’Avila Garcez presented on neurosymbolic AI; Dr Giacomo Tarroni discussed computer vision and medical imaging; Dr Ernesto Jiménez-Ruiz introduced advances in knowledge graphs; Professor Alfredo Pinelli highlighted AI applications in engineering, specifically fluid dynamics; and Professor Andrea Baronchelli addressed AI research in mathematics, focusing on complex systems.
A poster session and networking reception followed, showcasing current projects and opportunities for collaboration.
